It seems that in the last couple of weeks the New York streets outside the salon have felt a little less bleak, the air in the backyard garden has felt a lot warmer. The colors of spring are starting to pop up, and I’m not talking about any old flowers. 

As Spring begins to pop up outside our doors, we have noticed more and more clients coming in requesting fantasy hair color services. I personally think that the rise in our rainbow color services is due to a few factors. First, people are happy about the rising temperatures and want to reflect the brightness of Spring in any way they can. I also think that the relaxation of some Covid mandates following the decline of Delta variant and Omicron variant have many people all over NYC cautiously optimistic that the danger from Covid has passed. And finally, a shift in workplace culture over the last couple of years has made it acceptable, if not welcome, for people in almost any walk of life to rock the colors that were traditionally reserved for artists and rock stars.

There are a couple of questions that most clients ask our expert stylists before they commit to a dramatic fantasy color though. 

First, how much damage will my hair suffer if I go for a dramatic change?

This modern day Margot Tannenbaum came into the salon requesting a blunt cut bob turned bold by a rich magenta hue. 

This icy look was created for a client who wanted a bolder take on a two tone style. Many people are open to a tamer version of this style where the lower layer would be a darker blonde shade or even brunette. By using a bright blue along with the platinum our client was able to achieve a unique and one of a kind look.

This updated shag razor cut is accentuated with shades of crimson, black and if you look closely enough you can find the purple pieces laced throughout. This client allowed her stylist to amp up her rocker style with a color that is as much a statement as her throw back cut.

This girl is on fire. Balayage and blended styles aren’t just for beach blondes any more. This client wanted an ombre look, but also wanted a style that was uniquely her own. We were able to achieve a deeper red near the roots with a lightened red orange toward the end of her curly style. Though red is often a difficult color to maintain because it tends to fade quickly, we have found the Aveda fantasy colors keep their vibrancy long after some other color brands we have tried.

People, both inside the salon and in my personal life, always ask me the key to a good hair color. In my opinion, the answer to this question has two very distinct but equally important parts. There’s nothing quite like New York City in the fall. As the air gets crisper and the streets are filled with New Yorkers replace their tank tops and flip flops for sweaters and scarves, it is such a great time of year. The best part, in my opinion though, are the beautiful vibrant colors of the leaves on all of the trees. As the green of the trees around the salon, and in the backyard is replaced by rich golds, vibrant reds and ultimatley all shades of brown I feel so lucky to be able to witness the beauty of mother nature. This year though, it seems that the trees aren’t the only ones yearning for the colors of fall. In the last few weeks in the salon, we have seen hair reflecting nature as many of our clients are looking for the same hues we are seeing outdoors.

New Trend: The colors of Fall

Anything but Mellow Yellow

Sometimes the old adage is true, blondes can have more fun, but each of these sweet clients chose to go with a blonde that has a bit of a darker side. By utilizing a root shadow to varying degrees on each of these styles, our stylists were able to add dimension and functionality to these looks. Going so light can certainly be a commitment, and much of that relates to how often a client needs to visit the salon, but with the rooty shade of these styles a little growth only adds to the affect. That means that these fall looks can easily last until winter.

Red Alert

Sometimes there are trees in the city that get so much red foliage it almost appears as though they are on fire, especially at sunset. These girls are feeling that fiery look with each of their bright and saturated red shades. I always tell clients that this bold of a red color, while beautiful, can require some serious maintenance. Red hair color is the fastest shade to fade. Even natural red heads can often see fading of their natural tone over time. Fortunately there are now products to help combat that fading, like Evo Fabuloso Color Intensifying Conditioner in shades like Copper or Mahogany. This type of product really helps the red shades remain vibrant and can save you time between trips to the salon if you want to go for a super saturated red or auburn shade for fall.

Hot Chocolate

Some may say that once the leaves turn brown the beauty of fall has passed, but I would argue (as these ladies have) that there is nothing quite like the rich tones of a beautiful chocolate tone. The key to a really lovely, dimensional brunette like the ones in these images are the layered highlight tones. Sometimes people think that highlights mean you have to be blonde, but nothing could be further from the truth. Even dark hair should have some beautiful caramel tones layered into the color so that the different tones can play together for a more natural looking color. We’ve all seen a flat, boxed brunette that looks fake and flat. By contrast each of these colors were crafted by our expert stylist using many different tones that play well together and result in a look that is shiny and voluminous.

I love that I have seen the colors of my favorite season reflected in so many of our clients in the last few weeks. It feels like I get to experience fall whether inside or out, at work or at home. As a child of the 80s, I am certainly no stranger to the concept of a perm. In fact, I have always been very familiar with the process, one of my first “jobs” in a hair salon was detangling the tiny pink rollers required to set my grandmother’s hair from the floor of her beauty salon. During my teen years, a perm meant tight curls picked out to heights that defied gravity. The memory of those epic curls are so visceral I can almost smell the mix of processor and Aquanet. I think that for the last twenty years, we have culturally been recovering from a perm hangover. Maybe that’s why in my career as a stylist, the perms I have been asked to give clients are few and far between. With that in mind, I am about to say something quite controversial, the perm is back, baby!

Don’t get it twisted though (get it “twisted”, haha).the perms that I have been finding inspiration from lately are a much looser, more natural looking version of the iconic style. Think more loose California waves and less tight corkscrew curl. In fact, the great thing about the modern perm is that there are so many different variations to match every style. The look can be so fun and effortless, and though the process of getting a perm can be somewhat time consuming, a permed style can often be very easy to style and care for between visits to the salon. One of the things that really inspired me to write this love letter to perms is that we have been seeing more and more requests for the treatment at Wayward lately. I attribute the need for a more fun and carefree style to a couple of factors. First, Spring is just around the corner. Though the weather is still a little chilly here in Brooklyn, you can feel the air changing a little bit every day. Every spring we have clients start to come in requesting styles that are a little more daring and fun. Sometimes that translates into vivid colors or dramatic cuts, but it is starting to feel like 2021 may be the spring of the curl. The other factor that may be inspiring more people to embrace the twist is the fact that we can all kind of feel the end of the pandemic around the corner. With the vaccine getting distributed, it almost feels like we may be at the tail end of this terrible season of our lives, and people are ready to let loose and have a little more fun, or at least their hair is.

Check out this recent client of Hazel’s. When she walked through the door a couple of weeks ago, she was beautiful but her fine straight hair needed a boost. Two hours later and you can see how happy and confident her curls have made her. I love the look, and think Hazel was able to accomplish the perfect texture of curl to complement this client’s style and personality. Hazel is really such a talent with curls, whether they are natural or the result of one of her awesome perms, she can create the perfect cut to complement the bend.

I am so thrilled the perm is back. And with the return of the perm, it means that naturally curly girls will likely put away their flat irons and embrace their bounce as well. This ubiquitous style of the 80s is officially back, with a fresh new look and a cool new attitude. So get ready New York, it’s time to twist and shout!
