Hey, Hey Haley May

Haley May has always been a star in my eyes. I have known her since she was an apprentice at a salon I used to work at, and it was plain to see (even before I saw how talented Haley May is behind the chair) that her interest and education in the world of a hair salon were unsurpassed. She quickly became known as the concierge of the salon as she was the go to source for the answer to any question. From magically securing an appointment for a desperate client, to knowing the perfect product to provide tameness to curls or shine to dull hair, or even as a source for the best new band or a great movie recommendation for a Friday night, Haley May is a true guru stylist.
When I first started to daydream about what a salon I owned might look like, Haley May was one of the first people I confided in, and her inspiration helped guide me along the way to actually opening my doors. When I opened up shop, and was working to put this business together, my friend Haley May would spend her weekends helping pick paint colors and choose where chairs and mirrors would be placed. She would sacrifice her free time to help me build my dream. It was always part of the plan to have Haley May be a part of the wayward crew, but it took a few months before she was able to leave her former salon and come be a part of the team. I’m thrilled to work with her everyday, and in awe of the work she does for her clients, but mostly I love that I get to hang out with one of my favorite people every day and call it work. Take a look at some of the reasons I think Haley May’s talent is so impressive:
This is one of Haley May’s longtime clients, and their collaboration is always surprising and wonderful. On her most recent visit, Haley May updated her fresh blonde highlights with a hint of pink underneath. The style is the perfect mix to bridge the retro cut with full bangs to the modern with a hint of unexpected color. Haley May is always an expert stylist when it comes to blending the old and new for a modern take.
Highlights don’t have to be blonde. Haley May used a subtle approach with this client’s hand painted auburn highlights to allow her naturally rich chocolate brown base color to shine. The other thing that I admire about Haley May’s work with this client is the layered cut she achieved. We all know that cutting curly hair can be challenging, and I can honestly say that Haley May has turned it into an artform.
This classic French bob is the epitome of cool and fresh. This client was ready for a chop when she walked in with long straight bronde (you know dark blonde/light brown) hair, she and Haley May decided on this graduated platinum blonde to better fit her vivacious personality. When this client left that day, you could see the confidence radiating off of her. That is something many of Haley May’s clients have in common, she has a knack for finding their inner confidence and bringing it out with scissors and hair color.
This client came into the shop recently for the first time with her best friend. They were looking to start 2021 off right, and that meant total transformation cuts and color for them both. While I worked on her friend, this sweet girl was nervous but excited about cutting off several inches and adding highlights to her virgin hair for the very first time. As she and Haley May chatted about local bands and pop culture, Haley May was able to transform tired and neglected quarantine hair into a style that completely matched her client’s wishlist and personality.
I am so glad that my friend and ally over these last years behind the chair has been able to join my team at The Wayward Hairdresser. One of the best things about going to work every day is that I know I will get to laugh with her, and watch her genius as she makes old and new clients happy. Thanks for coming Haley May, I couldn’t do this without you. If you can’t do one more day without a style from Haley May, give us a call or book an appointment now.
